HACT’s seventh annual Gogolympics event will be taking place on Friday, 28th April 2017 at the Molweni Sports Ground and as always, we would like to extend a warm invitation to all of our friends, donors and partners to attend and support this very special event.
First conceptualized in 2011, this proudly South African, sporting extravaganza is hosted by HACT’s Gogo (Granny) Support Groups Programme and its partners - the Fisher’s Net, eThekwini Municipality, the Department of Health and the KZN Department of Sports & Recreation. The programme currently provides psychosocial support and economic empowerment opportunities to over 2000 grannies across eight communities in the Valley of 1000 Hills region, many of whom are caring for their orphaned grandchildren who have lost their parents as a result of HIV/AIDS and other reasons.
This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 1000 grannies set to take part. In addition to teams of gogos from across the Valley of 1000 Hills who will compete in soccer, netball and a host of other sports and traditional games on the day, this year’s event has also attracted the interest of gogos from KwaMashu, Inanda, Ntuzuma, Clermont and as far afield as the North West province.
“We are very excited that our Gogolympics is starting to attract new participants from other communities across the province and indeed the country,” says HACT’s Gogo Support Groups Manager, Cwengi Myeni. “While the Gogolympics is first and foremost about supporting those gogos involved in our Gogo Support Groups Programme, it is also a great opportunity to connect with grannies from other communities who may have also lost their children to violence, crime or disease and are now struggling to care for their orphaned grandchildren.”
The Gogolympics would not be possible without the support of our generous sponsors such as Sozo Food and GreenHome that, for the second year in a row, will be providing all our gogos with a delicious breakfast on the day.
“Our vision at Sozo Food has always been to provide nutritious, quality meals and the Gogolympics gives us the opportunity to be part of this great event filled with the most amazing women. The work of the Gogo’s in the communities that they serve is irreplaceable, and we are really proud to be a part of a day such as this, honouring them for their commitment.” We are also very happy that once again GreenHome has sponsored their biodegradable bowls and spoons for breakfast. “We are thrilled to be able to support the 7th annual Gogolympics. We wish the gogo’s competing on the day the best of luck and trust they will enjoy the nutritious meal served at the event in GreenHome’s 100% biodegradable packaging.” Catherine Morris, Managing Director, GreenHome
