VACANCIES: 1 x Cook & 1 x Cleaner in HACT's Respite Unit

The Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) is a non-profit organisation that exists to serve all those
impacted by HIV/AIDS by providing unconditional love and hope in a practical, sustainable way. The
HACT offices are situated in the central town of Hillcrest, 40 minutes west of Durban, and projects
serve the surrounding communities in the Valley of 1000 Hills region. Projects include: HIV
awareness and education; HIV counselling and testing; an outpatients clinic; a 24-bed respite unit; a
HIV prevention programme; an onsite plant nursery; a clothing scheme; and the Woza Moya
income generation project (and onsite store).
 
The Respite Unit provides love and care for 24 patients at a time. Patients are in final stages of AIDS
or other terminal illnesses such as cancer. Roughly 70% of the patients recover and are discharged
and 30% pass away with dignity and respect. The Unit is overseen by Professional and Enrolled
Nurses and run by Home Based Carers.
 
The Respite Unit is now looking for a Cook in the Respite Unit. The cook is required to work day
shift, Monday to Sunday from 7am to 5pm and will work one week on and one week off.
Requirements:
- Candidates should have at least two years’ proven experience as a chef in a kitchen or in a
restaurant
- Able to work as part of a team
- Be comfortable to be working with the sick
- Fluency in spoken and written isiZulu (essential) and English (preferable)
Your duties include:
 Assume full responsibility for the day to day efficient running of the Respite Unit Kitchen.
 Interacting with patients on a daily basis to find out dietary requirements.
 With food volunteer draw up week menu on a Tuesday.
 Do shopping at Oxford as per list on a Tuesday.
 Work with the extra helper on a Tuesday to make sure all donated food is packed away
hastily and utilised effectively. Use this day to spring clean the kitchen.
 Prepare and cook meals according to an agreed menu, however, allowing space for creative
taste enhancements or additions, and ensuring that the dietary requirements of the patients
are met.
 Serving of food to patients and visitors, including tea, coffee or juice when requested
outside of meal times.
 Washing, drying and packing away all dishes after each meal.
 Cleaning and disinfecting all work surfaces, kitchen counters, including fridges, freezers,
microwave, and cupboards inside and out, pantry, basins, floors, dustbins and outside
disposal areas directly related to the kitchen, on a daily basis.
 Management and control of all stock in the kitchen pantry, fridge, freezers and other
cupboards. Pantry to be packed and arranged in an orderly manner.
 Stock rotation. Use initiative and ensure that stock, whether, fresh, perishable or dry is used
before it has expired.
 If the Chef leaves the kitchen for tea or lunch breaks, or visits with the patients, this is
permissible when, and only if, the kitchen is clean, neat and tidy keep the kitchen locked.
 Ensure that you work with the donated foods whilst they are still fresh get things into the
fridge /freezer as soon as possible.
 At the end of each day the kitchen must be:
o Clean: no dirty dishes, leftover food in pots, dirty floors, dirty fridges, full rubbish
bin, dirty outside area etc.
o Pantry cupboard must be locked and keys taken with.
o Freezer must be locked and keys taken with.
o If you are going on leave keys must be left with the supervisor.
 To enjoy preparing and cooking meals for the unit and to take pride in their work at all
times.
 To work together with the team of caregivers and volunteers.

Cleaner Requirements:
 
The Respite Unit is looking for a General Cleaner in the Respite Unit. The cleaner is required
to work day shift, Monday to Friday from 7.45 am to 5.00pm.
Requirements:
- Candidates should have at least one year’s experience as a cleaner with knowledge of cleaning
chemicals and equipment
- Able to work as part of a team
- Be comfortable to be working with the sick
- Fluency in spoken and written isiZulu (essential) and English (preferable)
Your duties include:
 Sweep and mop the floors in the ward making sure corners are not missed
 Clean the chapel
 Change all towels daily in male toilet sink
 Make sure male toilets have toilet paper
 Clean male toilets with pine disinfectant and toilet brush 4 times a day
 Clean all basins with Handy Andy in the wards 4 times a day
 Put the fresh flowers in the vase
 Watering the flowers and the plants in the ward
 Clean windows when needed
 Spring clean office one time a week
 Fill soap containers
 Empty bins 2 x a day
 Keep paper towels at all basins for staff to wash hands
 Clean sluice room
 Keep the veranda clean and tidy at the back
 Keep curtains clean and the rails (fix when needed)
 Keep equipment clean (e.g. monkey chain, bedside lockers...)
 Clean tiles in male bathroom and walls
 Clean and dampdust every day in the ward
 Keep accurate control of stock in the storeroom.
 Ensure that donations are written in the donations book and locked into the Big Box after
hours. Follow up by sending donations to the main office when it is open.
 Polish floors using the floor polisher every 2 months.
 Give the nursing manager a list of needs when required.
