WORLD AIDS DAY 2022! Staff, supporters and beneficiaries came together to pause and reflect on both the progress and ongoing challenges of the global epidemic of HIV and AIDS. The commemorative event involved a Candle Lighting and Remembrance ceremony in HACT’s Respite Unit garden.
There was message from Rev. Crundwell from Hillcrest Methodist Church, songs from HACT’s choir along with a call to continued action by Candace Hollaar Davidson (CEO) who spoke about the need to forge ahead in reducing vulnerability, promoting education and equitable health services, and providing specialized care for people living with HIV and AIDS. She also spoke about the turbulent past few years with COVID-19 which has endangered the HIV response as HIV goals have stalled, resources have shrunk, and millions of lives are at risk as a result. South Africa, and more specifically the province of KZN and the eThekwini District, are epicentres for the HIV pandemic which remains a global, and local, health crisis especially due to factors of increased risk, gender-based violence, disparity and stigma.
Sr. Sphe Gamede (Nursing Services Manager) spoke of the challenges, but also the privilege, to have walked alongside our admitted patients during 2022. The 65 individuals who lost their battle to HIV and/or cancer within HACT’s in-patient unit over the past year were also remembered and honoured.
This WAD2022, HACT calls everyone to boldly recognize and address the inequalities which are holding back progress in ending AIDS and to equalize access to HIV services, particularly for children and those most at risk.
