Run Comrades for HACT - Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust - KwaZulu-Natal - hillaids Official Charity

How are you making a difference in 2024?

“What keeps a nation strong is really the community, it is about people helping each other’ (Cesar Millan). Running for HACT was one of my most memorable experiences of Comrades in 2023. It was fulfilling to run for a purpose! Every step I took mattered, and I have decided to continue raising funds for HACT every year.” Nyambeni Ntsundeni Nefale (Raised R 7,000 in 2023)

How your support adds up

2024 is HACT’s seventh consecutive year as an official Comrades Marathon charity. Thanks to the generous support of our local and international runners, funds raised through this campaign have been vital in sustaining HACT’s health, empowerment and education services to those most vulnerable.

Most notably, funds raised have helped to keep open our Othandweni (Place of Love in isiZulu) 24-bed Hospice & Palliative Care In-Patient Unit. This dedicated Unit provides round the clock nursing care for adults and children with advanced stages of cancer and/or AIDS. In a tight economic climate of reduced funding and other hospices closing, HACT’s Comrades campaign has literally helped to keep our doors open with funding for essential costs such as medication, medical supplies, transport, food and nursing personnel.

Runners’ Testimonials

  • “Through the sweat, the pain, and the endless miles, I ran the Comrades Marathon 2023 for the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, proving that compassion has no finish line. Every step I took was a testament to the power of determination, reminding me that even when the road seems never-ending, the impact we make on others’ lives is worth every stride. Just as the journey of the marathon transforms the runner, my journey with Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust has transformed countless lives. Let this race be a reminder that with a heart full of purpose, we can conquer any challenge, cross any finish line, and bring hope to those in need.”

  • “I’ve been fortunate to participate in the Comrades Marathon, proudly representing the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust. Additionally, in 2023 I was part of the HACT team who organized their part of this momentous day. The unwavering dedication and commitment exhibited by the HACT team towards their runners and the seamless orchestration of their water table is truly praiseworthy. The HACT team approaches this opportunity and experience with deep appreciation, recognizing its value as a privilege, and embracing every moment wholeheartedly.”

  • “So why do I “DEAN WIGHT ” RUN4HACT? To cut a long story short, HACT is an amazing organization doing outstanding work in combating the HIV pandemic in areas alongside the Comrades route. So, when I was approached by them in 2017 to run for them, the naturel answer was ‘yes’ and this just gave me another purpose to run because in running, like most things in life, we all need a WHY. So WHY not run for an organisation who is a stone’s throw away from the route of the Ultimate Human Race? They have become family to me and my lovely wife, and every year whilst running Comrades I shed a tear and spare a thought for those that affected by HIV and AIDS.”

  • “I love running, it has become a key part of my life. Running the Comrades is a privilege that one only understands when they actually runs the race. But, to run Comrades and do it for somebody else, knowing that you are making a difference is an honour. Each year I embrace the opportunity to make a small difference to HACT as a Comrades charity!”

  • “I am a doctor, and I have worked in Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and know firsthand the worst of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It is a great honour and privilege for me to run for HACT as my small way of contributing to help my fellow Africans living with HIV people to lead independent, self-sustaining, lives not governed solely by the HIV lab result!”

  • “For my 2023 Comrades race, l joined hands with HACT in the fight against HIV and AIDS. By this l wanted to raise awareness, promote compassion, and support those affected by the disease. Every step I took is a symbol of solidarity with HACT’s vision of an AIDS free society and in remembrance of those dear to me who lost their lives to this disease. I believe that together we can make a difference in fighting stigma, providing education, and ultimately finding a cure.”

  • “I first ran for HACT in 2015 before they were an official charity, I got my first taste of the impact they make to peoples lives, and the diversity of that impact, from primary health care, to employment to fantastic programs with gogos and kids. I’m proud to be a small contributor to what HACT is doing, I will remain a supporter even when my Comrades days are over. But, that’s not all. Since HACT became an official charity, I’ve seen that same tangible impact be passed on to the runners. We truly feel part of the team, and the support leading up to and on race day is second to none. I’ve heard numerous other runners evangelise about the positive impact HACT has made on their Comrades experience, with similar commitments to be long term supporters. In short HACT embodies the spirit of Comrades with an all inclusive heart and a passion to see others succeed.”

  • “For me, running the Comrades Marathon is more than a personal challenge; it’s a way to honour and support those whose daily lives are a testament to resilience and courage. I firmly believe that retaining HACT as an official charity will ensure the Comrades Marathon continues to make a real, tangible difference in the lives of those impacted by HIV/AIDS.”
